In 1997, a good deed by a few guys to help the homeless evolved into something much bigger - Pathway Charitable Group. We remain firm in our belief that by giving people the tools they need to grow, we can help them make positive life change. By continuing to develop our support services, partly funded by our social enterprise model, we are creating a stronger, safer community for all.
We are all about saying yes. Yes to people looking for employment or to upskill, yes to families and individuals seeking affordable accommodation and yes to people in prison with the desire and commitment to change their lives for the better. By saying yes, we are helping people make a fresh start.
Our unique reintegration programme, the Navigate Initiative, is helping people make a fresh start and coupled with our wraparound support services, guides them through the difficult process of settling back into the community on release. We do this through community-based social services and workshops, unlocking employment opportunities and providing suitable accommodation options.
Based just outside Christchurch, He Kete is the South Island’s only residential drug and alcohol therapeutic community for women. Wahine on bail, parole or community based sentences or orders are supported to understand their substance abuse issues to help break the cycle of addiction and offending. He Kete is run in partnership with Odyssey House and Purapura Whetu, with support from Project Esther Trust. Since its launch in 2019, more than 80 women have graduated from the 16-week programme.
Pathway Affordable Housing (PAH) aims to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and crime by providing warm, safe and affordable accommodation for people in desperate need. At present we have four tenanted properties in Chritchurch, with another three under construction. PAH became a registered social housing provider in 2021 and coupled with our housing development projects, has further enhanced our ability to provide families with a fresh start.
Our employment initiatives provide opportunities for people looking for meaningful work or seeking to learn new skills to give themselves the best possible chance of success in the workplace.
Employment can be a major barrier to former prisoners settling back into society. Many are willing and able to work, but simply aren’t given the opportunity thanks to their past actions. Pathway’s employment service helps them find meaningful employment, without judgement. This includes a four-week work assessment, assistance creating a CV, interview skills and the actual job search. That’s followed by six weeks transitional support with a suitable employer, or a four-week work trial for those not deemed work ready.
