Matea Trust was set up in 1992 to provide residential service and support for people with intellectual disabilities who are physically, mentally and socially able to integrate into the existing family environment provided by Matea.
The Trust was established by two local farmers who identified a need and donated time, land, buildings and great effort to create Matea – Translated from the Maori language it means… ‘To Be Needed’ Everyone deserves to feel needed!
Every individual deserves a friendly, safe, family environment that promotes the values of friendship, opportunity and personal growth. Part of our philosophy is to promote the integration of persons with an intellectual disability into a participating role in the community to enable them to be as independent as possible and enjoy an optimum quality of life.
Everyone is a valued member, respected and encouraged to be the very best they can be. We are committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all persons.
The ‘Homestead’ provides for up to 8 permanent residents and has a transitional respite care programme as a trial for suitability purposes. Most residents are mid to long-term depending on their requirements.
The Trust provides employment opportunities through our Vocational Service and has two Vocational Supervisors who assist in the supervision and guidance of the clients in the service. They take on local contracts that are within our clients’ abilities, such as light work including but not limited to lawn mowing, clearing properties, cutting firewood, collecting donated firewood for Matea stock, spreading mulch for some clients etc.
Our service is mainly involved with the delivery and stacking of firewood (for which we have a fantastic reputation). These all give a real sense of contribution to the community where skills are gained, and life lessons learnt.
All of our firewood is of great quality and very dry. You can support our cause by ordering your own firewood here.
