Our Mission

The Windy Hill Sanctuary and Aotea Community Native Plant Nursery have spent 22 years ecologically restoring the south eastern area of Great Barrier Island.

About

Windy Hill Sanctuary brings together leaders in ecological restoration and integrated pest management on ecologically significant private land managed by volunteers for 22 years on Aotea Great Barrier Island.

How We Create Change

Protects threatened species - kaka, kereru, pateke, black petrel, grey faced petrel and range of lizards including the rare chevron skink.

Reducing Animal Pests - A comprehensive monitoring programme indicates we are achieving our objectives of reducing plant and animal pests to low densities.

Restoring native biodiversity - This is the largest area of protected land on the island and a key example of the benefits of pest management to the native biodiversity.

Our Impact

  • Over 300 hectares covenanted with QE II Trust within the 800 hectare Windy Hill Sanctuary.
  • North Island robins returned to the island after an absence of 140 years.
  • 26 work opportunities created to date with many field team members having come from the pool of unemployed on Island
  • ‍

This is a tick the triple bottom line project - conserved ecology, supported local economy, and social benefits created from sustained employment.
